Ingredients
For 4 servings
- 500 g ground beef
- 280 g elbow macaroni
- 100 g onion
- 150 g green bell pepper
- 400 g tomato sauce
- 60 g ketchup
- 15 ml Worcestershire sauce
- 10 g yellow mustard
- 8 g brown sugar
- 5 ml olive oil
- 2 g salt
- 450 ml water
Instructions
- 1
Finely dice the onion and green bell pepper. Use ground beef with approximately 10% fat, plain canned tomato sauce, and small elbow macaroni with a package cooking time of 6–7 minutes.
- 2
Heat the olive oil in a deep 30 cm skillet over medium-high heat for 1 minute, uncovered. Add the beef, onion, pepper and salt. Cook for 5 minutes, breaking the beef into small crumbles and stirring frequently. Check several thick clusters of beef with a food thermometer: they must reach 160°F (71°C).
- 3
Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, brown sugar and 450 ml water. Scrape the bottom of the skillet, increase the heat to high and bring to a boil, about 2 minutes.
- 4
Stir the dry macaroni directly into the sauce. Cover, reduce the heat to medium-low to maintain a steady simmer, and cook for 7 minutes, stirring twice and replacing the lid each time. This gives the pasta its package cooking time directly in the sauce.
- 5
Remove the lid and cook over medium-high heat for 1 minute, stirring continuously, until the macaroni is tender and the thick sauce clings to it without a pool of liquid. Divide into four portions.
